Humboldt described the natural environment of the Ural and
its resources in his well-known work “Central Asia”. He remained about four
weeks in the North and Middle Ural and visited several metallurgical works (Verh-Isetsky,
Neviansky, Verh and Nizhni Tagilsky, Kushvansky, Bogoslovsky ones), Beriozovsky
gold mine, Shabrovsky fields, Gumeshevsky and Turyinsky mines. The expedition
headed by him also went to Altai mountains and then came back to the South Ural
where he visited the town of Miass and Ilmen mountains and ascended the Big
Taganai mountain.
Humboldt saw his sixtieth anniversary in Zlatoust where
local metallurgists presented him with a saber made from Zlatoust Damascus
steel, as a token of respect. Humboldt also visited the jasper field near Orsk
as well as Solt-Iletsk salt-fields.
The problems of rational uses of the Ural rich resources
are nowadays a very urgent aim of research of several Institutes of the Ural
branch of the Academy of Sciences.

Geophysics, Institute of Mining of the Ural branch of the Russian Academy of
Sciences could offer to the visitors to take part in the scientific
